Even the wet, shabby walking figure is regarded with a quiet, distant gaze. — By the time this short note ends, you are awake.

種田山頭火Taneda Santōka
種田山頭火(1882–1940)。五・七・五にとらわれない自由律俳句の代表的俳人。四十代で出家し、笠ひとつで西日本を行乞(ぎょうこつ)して歩きながら、生活のことばで句を詠みつづけました。飾らず、湿りすぎず、朝の頭にすっと入ってくる句です。Taneda Santōka (1882–1940), a leading poet of free-verse haiku unbound by the 5-7-5 form. Ordained in his forties, he walked western Japan as a mendicant with only a sedge hat, making poems from the words of daily life. Unadorned and never mawkish, they slip straight into a waking mind.
