鉢の子The Begging Bowl (Hachi no ko)
91句91 poems大正14年〜昭和7年(1925-1932) 行乞流転の旅1925–1932 · Years of mendicant wandering
出家得度して熊本の味取観音堂の堂守となり、やがて笠と鉄鉢ひとつで行乞流転の旅へ。山頭火の放浪の原点となる時代。「分け入つても分け入つても青い山」をはじめ、代表句の多くがここにある。Ordained at last, Santōka became caretaker of the Mitori Kannon hall in Higo, then set out on a life of mendicant wandering with nothing but a bamboo hat and an iron begging bowl. This is the wellspring of his vagabond years. Many of his best-known verses belong here, beginning with "going deeper and still deeper into the blue mountains."

其中一人One Man Within (Gochū hitori)
47句47 poems昭和7年〜9年(1932-1934) 其中庵にて1932–1934 · At the Gochū-an hermitage
郷里山口の小郡に「其中庵」を結び、はじめて自分の庵を持った時代。雪や月と差し向かいの独居の静けさ、御飯の炊ける音。暮らしの句が生まれはじめる。In Ogōri, near his native Yamaguchi, Santōka built a hermitage he called the Gochū-an — the first dwelling he could truly call his own. These are poems of solitary quiet, of sitting face to face with snow and moon, of the sound of rice coming to the boil. Here the verses of daily living begin to appear.

行乞途上On the Begging Road (Gyōkotsu tojō)
41句41 poems昭和8年〜9年(1933-1934) 庵からの行乞1933–1934 · Begging out from the hermitage
其中庵を拠点にしつつ、なお托鉢の旅に出た日々。道の上の句が多い。「けふもいちにち風をあるいてきた」の風は、この時代の風である。Days when, with the Gochū-an as his base, he still went out on the alms-begging road. Many of these are poems of the open road. The wind in "today too, a whole day, i walked the wind" is the wind of this time.

山行水行Walking Mountains, Walking Waters (Sankō suikō)
103句103 poems昭和9年〜11年(1934-1936) 山へ水へ1934–1936 · To the mountains, to the waters
題は「山を行き、水を行く」。旅と庵を往き来しながら、山の音と水の音に身体が溶けてゆく時期。澄んだ句がそろう。The title means "to walk the mountains, to walk the waters." Moving back and forth between travel and the hermitage, Santōka let his body dissolve into the sound of mountains and the sound of water. The verses gathered here are clear and limpid.
- 炎天かくすところなく水のながれくるblazing sky, nowhere to hide, and water comes flowing
- 日ざかりのお地蔵さまの顔がにこにこin the blaze of noon the jizō's face all smiles

東京へ、木曽へ、平泉へ。芭蕉の足跡と亡き友の墓を訪ねた長い東上の旅。吐き捨てた二千句から拾い上げられた旅の句たち。To Tokyo, to Kiso, to Hiraizumi. A long eastward journey following the footsteps of Bashō and visiting the graves of departed friends. These travel verses were gathered up out of two thousand poems he had thrown away.

庵の暮らしをみずから「雑草風景」と名づけた。雑草は雑草として生え伸び咲き実ればよろしい — 其中庵の朝夕、飯と水と虫の音。Santōka named his hermitage life himself "a landscape of weeds." Let weeds grow and stretch and bloom and bear fruit as weeds — that is enough. Morning and evening at the Gochū-an: rice, water, and the sound of insects.

濡れてかがやく柿の落葉に造化の妙を見た、其中庵晩期。身辺の小さなものへ目が深くなってゆく、成熟の句集。In the wet, shining fallen leaves of the persimmon, Santōka saw the wonder of creation. These are the late Gochū-an years, a mature collection in which his eye grows ever deeper toward the small things close at hand.

其中庵を離れ、湯田温泉の「風来居」へ。題のとおり孤独と寒さを抱いた冬の句が多いが、その底に湯の町のあたたかさも灯る。Leaving the Gochū-an, Santōka moved to the Fūrai-kyo at Yuda hot spring. As the title suggests, many of these are winter poems that hold solitude and cold, yet beneath them the warmth of a hot-spring town also glimmers.

終の住処となった松山の一草庵時代。没年までの句稿から自選した七十二句。濁りの落ちた、晩年の澄みきった句が並ぶ。The years at the Issō-an in Matsuyama, which became his final dwelling. Seventy-two verses chosen by his own hand from the manuscripts written up to the year of his death. Here stand the clear, transparent poems of his last years, all sediment fallen away.
