炎天をいただいて乞ひ歩くthe blazing sky borne on my head I go begging

照りつける真夏の空を「いただいて」、托鉢して歩く。灼けつく日ざしさえ、天からの授かりものとして受けとってしまう。行乞という暮らしの厳しさと、それをまるごと引き受けた者の静かな覚悟が、「いただく」の一語に込められている。Bearing the blazing midsummer sky upon his head, he walks his begging rounds. Even the scorching sun he receives as something granted from heaven. The harshness of the mendicant's life, and the quiet resolve of one who has taken it on whole, are gathered into that single word itadaku, 'to receive as a gift.'
