出征兵士を出した誉れの家。軒先に並んだ日の丸が、風にはたはたと音を立てている。「はたたく」は旗が鳴ること。人の声ではなく、旗の音だけが並んで鳴っている家の前を、句は通り過ぎていく。A house honored for having sent off a soldier. Along its eaves the rising-sun flags rattle and snap in the wind. Hatataku is the sound a flag makes. No human voices, only the noise of flags lined up and clattering, and the poem passes by the front of the house.
