けふはおわかれの糸瓜がぶらりtoday is farewell — a loofah dangling

「川棚を去る」と前書のある句。世話になった温泉の土地を発つ朝、軒先の糸瓜がぶらりと垂れて見送ってくれる。しんみりした別れの気分を、糸瓜ののんきな姿がほどよく茶化してくれる。A poem headed "Leaving Kawatana." On the morning he departs the hot-spring town that has cared for him, a loofah dangles under the eaves to see him off. The easygoing shape of the loofah nicely takes the edge off the wistful mood of parting.
