草のしげるや礎石ところどころのたまり水the grass grows thick — foundation stones, here and there pooled water

平泉毛越寺での句。伽藍は失われ、茂る草の間に礎石が残り、ところどころに水が溜まっている。芭蕉が夏草を詠んだ地で、山頭火は礎石の窪みの雨水に目をとめた。A poem at Mōtsū-ji in Hiraizumi. The temple halls are gone; among the thick grass the foundation stones remain, with water pooled here and there. On the ground where Bashō wrote of the summer grasses, Santōka's eye settled on the rainwater in the hollows of the foundation stones.
