満開の桜の向こうに、刑務所の塀がある。花の盛りと、閉ざされた建物と。取り合わせだけで成り立つ句だが、塀の内の人にもこの花は見えるだろうか、と思わせるものがある。Beyond the cherry trees at their peak stands the wall of a prison. The height of the blossoms and the shut-away building, set side by side — the poem lives on that juxtaposition alone, though it makes you wonder whether the people inside the wall can see these flowers too.
