雲のゆききも栄華のあとの水ひかるeven the drift of clouds — after the glory the water shines
くもの ゆききも えいがの あとの みず ひかるkumo no yukiki mo eiga no ato no mizu hikaru

『草木塔』柿の葉Sōmokutō · Persimmon Leaves (Kaki no ha)
宇治平等院での句。藤原氏の栄華のあとに残る池の水が光り、雲がその上をゆきかう。千年前の栄華は消え、雲と水だけが昔と同じ営みをつづけている。A poem at the Byōdō-in in Uji. The water of the pond that remains after the glory of the Fujiwara clan shines, and clouds pass to and fro above it. The glory of a thousand years ago is gone; only the clouds and the water go on with the same work as long ago.
