草にすわり飯ばかりの飯sitting in the grass — plain rice, plain rice

行乞の途上、草に座って、飯ばかりの飯を食べる。おかずも汁もない白飯だけの食事を、これだけの言葉で差し出す。削りに削った句形が、そのまま暮らしのかたちでもある。On the road of mendicant begging, he sits in the grass and eats plain rice with nothing on it. He offers up a meal of bare white rice — no dishes, no soup — in just these few words. A form pared down to the bone, which is itself the very shape of his life.
