托鉢の鉄鉢を差し出せば、施しの米ではなく、霰が飛び込んでくる。冬空の下に立ちつくす行乞の身。けれど鉢の中ではねる霰の音には、どこか天からの授かりもののような響きもある。山頭火の代表句として知られる一句。He holds out his iron begging bowl (teppatsu), and in leaps not alms of rice but hail. A mendicant body standing rooted beneath the winter sky — and yet in the sound of the hail bouncing in the bowl there is somehow a ring of something granted from heaven. One of Santōka's best-known poems.
