永平寺での句。蝶がひらひらと、大伽藍の甍を越えていった。重々しい修行道場の屋根を、いちばん軽いいのちが軽々と越える。ひらがなばかりの表記が蝶の軽さそのものである。A poem at Eihei-ji. A butterfly, fluttering, has gone over the ridge-tiles of the great temple hall. The lightest of lives crosses lightly over the roof of a solemn training hall. Written all in hiragana, the line is itself the lightness of the butterfly.
