霜しろくころりと死んでゐるthe frost white — someone lies dead, just like that

「行旅病死者」と前書がある。旅の途中で行き倒れた人が、白い霜の中にころりと横たわっている。「ころりと」の軽さが、かえって凄い。同じ旅に生きる者として、他人事ではない死である。It carries the headnote "One who died on the road, of sickness on a journey." A person fallen dead mid-journey lies stretched out, just like that, in the white frost. The lightness of korori — "just like that" — is all the more terrible for it. To a man living the same wandering life, this is no stranger's death.
