かうして生きてはゐる木の芽や草の芽やstill alive after all these tree buds and grass buds

友人の緑平に宛てた句。ともかくもこうして生きています、という便りに、木の芽や草の芽がそっと寄り添う。うまく生きているとは言っていない。それでも芽吹きの季節、生きていることをそのまま肯定してくれるのは、いつも足もとの草木だった。A verse addressed to his friend Ryokuhei. To a letter saying, at any rate, I am living like this, the buds of trees and grasses quietly draw near. He does not claim to be living well. Even so, in the budding season, it was always the plants at his feet that affirmed, just as it was, the fact of his being alive.
